Providing security for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is expected to cost $7.7 million in the coming fiscal year.

Providing security for Education Secretary Betsey DeVos is expected to cost $7.7 million in the coming fiscal year, an increase from fiscal 2018's estimated and actual figures, which were $6.54 million and $6.79 million, respectively. Unlike the previous four education secretaries, who utilized the Department of Education's security team, DeVos is being guarded by the US Marshals Service when she travels, notes Newsweek. Politico reports: "The agreements signed by the Education Department and the U.S. Marshals Service includes salaries and benefits for the marshals, their travel and per diem expenses, one 'leased and equipped limousine' for DeVos, and more, according to the first signed agreement." That added measure of protection was ordered by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. According to The Hill, the Marshals Service said its involvement in her security is due to the "nature of threats against the secretary," but did not elaborate.  Notably, DeVos is picking up part of the tab for her detail. The news outlet notes that she is "footing the bill personally for all her public and private travel and paying for marshals to fly on her private plane."
