Okay, so I only recently learned how to ride a unicycle, and last week I learned how to sort of free mount. My biggest achievement that day was the simple act of riding to the park though, where I encountered everything from intersections to sidewalks, to steps. I really contemplated just hitting the mountain bike trails today, but I opted instead to go to Birch State Park for a slightly less violent introduction to off-roading. I know you guys want to see me go down in flames, but maybe not today.

This time, I brought my stabilizer with a little bendy tripod on the end. Just riding with this contraption is going to be challenging.

First, I need to get from the car to the nature path. Despite me riding a unicycle through the park with an action camera and sophisticated looking selfie stick, nobody has said a word to me. Either I look totally unapproachable, insane, or armed and dangerous. Maybe it’s all three, but I’m not in the mood to explain myself anyway.

Aside from the occasional root or muddy spot, these paths are pretty smooth. It’s the twists and turns that make them challenging. Free mounting in a confined space is also difficult. One thing I never even considered was ducking under a branch on a unicycle. I’d go back and give it another try, but standing around in this jungle is going to get me infected with zika. I’d better keep moving.

This little incline doesn’t look like much, but on a unicycle it seems like an insurmountable obstacle. Going down it is actually not so bad, climbing it is another story. Note to self: Follow your own advice and hydrate. I climbed a 900 foot hill over the weekend and felt relatively fine, but this 2 foot incline has me almost vomiting.

Back to work.

Although I got excited and fell almost immediately after, I eventually prevailed. Now to get back to the car and greedily gulp melted iced coffee.

I thought this shiba inu was going to lose its mind when I passed, but it seemed as confused as its owner.

I think at some point I’ve hated everything I got good at. Today, I hate unicycling, and I guess that’s a good sign. It means I care enough about it to keep trying, to the point of absolute exhaustion and frustration.

After this little trip to the park though, I think I’m ready to try some real mountain bike trails to shock my system. We’ll see how that works out. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.
