Mango the national fruit of India is often referred to as the king of fruits and is native and indigenous to India. Mangoes are one of the most popular fruits in the world but although to most people in the west, the mango is an exotic fruit to people living in India this fruit is the highlight of the blistering Indian summer. The Hindi name for mango is Aam which also means common. Mango or Mangifera indica is the largest fruit tree in the world. The tree is green at all time of the year but it only bears fruit in the heights of summers, the hotter the temperature, the sweeter the mango. India produces one-third of all mangoes grown worldwide but most of them are consumed within the country and the mangoes that are finally exported to the rest of the world only make up about 1% of internationally traded mangoes. India grows more mangoes than all other fruits put together the number of mango varieties in India is estimated a staggering 500 to 1,000 distinct types. Some varieties of mangoes are extra sweet or juicy. Some of the most common varieties are Alphonso, Chausa, Dashehri, Langda, Safeda and Peri.
