Kal Yafai: I still want Roman Gonzalez

Kal Yafai still dreams of a huge world title unification fight with Roman Gonzalez despite the latter losing his crown.

Hometown hero Yafai defends the WBA super flyweight crown in the main event against Japan’s Suguru Muranaka at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena on Saturday night.

It’s a first fight for the 27-year-old Brummie since becoming champion and he wants all of the belts in the division long-term.

Nicaraguan Gonzalez, a four-weight world title winner, had been ranked as the world’s pound-for-pound best until his first-ever pro defeat in March.

Unfancied Thai puncher Srisaket Sor Rungvisai stunned Gonzalez through a majority decision at Madison Square Garden in New York, United States, to take his WBC honours.

Sor Rungvisai, Yafai, Jerwin Ancajas (IBF) and Naoya Inoue (WBO) are now the super flyweights to beat and the Englishman among the lot reckons he can see off all comers.

Yafai believes Gonzalez will invoke his rematch clause and beat Sor Rungvisai the second time around, which would renew his interest in him.

First comes Muranaka on the Matchroom Boxing bill, live on Sky Sports. He was talking to Seconds Out reporter Craig Birch.
