Macedonians protested in front of the parliament building in Skopje on June 13 against an agreement to change their country’s name to the Republic of North Macedonia, Radio Free Europe reported. The deal with Greece was reached on June 12 after decades of disputes. RFE reported that about 1,000 protesters gathered to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, calling him a traitor for agreeing to the name change, and expressing support for Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov, who said he would not sign the deal on the grounds that it violates the country’s constitution.Greece objects to the state’s use of the name Macedonia, arguing that it could imply territorial claims over its northern region of the same name.
