Aircraft Fanatic Who Always Wanted To Fly In A Spitfire Built The Plane In His GARAGE

Determined Alan James, 63, dreamed of building a full-size aeroplane from the age of 10. He flew model planes competitively for years before building his Pietenpol Air Camper 25 years ago. But a Spitfire was his real dream - so he made one of those too. "I like making model planes," the father-of-one said. "I've been doing it since a lad - but full-size planes interest me too. "I always wanted to build one for myself. "So I built a Pietenpol about 25 years ago and have been flying it since. "Like every true Brit I wanted to fly a Spitfire. "Five years ago you could get a flight in one. Rules were regulated and now you have to enrol in an academy and then you can fly it for about forty minutes. It costs about five grand. "So I thought about it and realised I could spend that money on building one!" Alan, from Reading, Berks., bought plans from the Light Aircraft Association for around £150 back in 2012.
