Hackney Council Under Fire For Spending £1.2m On 'Prison-Like' Estate

A rough inner-city council has come under fire for buying a £1.2 million country estate to give free holidays for troubled families - after locals insisted they surround it with a massive fence. Families with tearaway teens and vulnerable children are being invited to a £1.2m country mansion for therapy boot-camp before being offered a second free getaway. The retreat in Kennington, Oxfordshire, has been slammed by posh villagers as a "waste of taxpayers' money," who insisted they build a 2.1m fence around the entire estate to keep the families in. A Freedom of Information request revealed that families invited will also be given a free holiday at Center Parcs. Matthew Batstone, 52, is leading a revolt against the seven-bedroom 19th century Silver Trees therapy centre, owned by inner London's Hackney Council. The dad-of-two lives next door to the six-week boot camp, available for up to three families at a time to enjoy a communal lounge, play room and private woods with a team of social workers. Matthew said: "It is a completely stupid thing to do and it's a waste of taxpayers' money.
