Crimean Tatars commemorate the 74th anniversary of Soviet deportations in Belogorsk, Crimea.

The mosque was constructed by prominent Crimean Tatar philanthropist and businessman Resul Velilyaev, who was detained by Russian security services in spring 2018. He is now being held in Lefortovo prison, Moscow.

Socially active members of the Crimean Tatar community have faced difficulties since Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea . The man who filmed the video deleted it immediately after uploading it as "the police often catch us," he wrote.

Dozens were detained on Friday in the Crimean capital, Simferopol according to RFE/RL reports. There was a heavy police presence at commemorative events.

Stalin oversaw the deportation of more than 180,000 Crimean Tatars from their homeland in 1944. They were not allowed to return until the late 1980s.

"The pain of the Tatar people is our common pain," Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko wrote on Facebook.
