A vast vacant space which once housed a Borders bookstore is a metaphor for the pressure placed by the digital marketplace on swathes of American real estate. The FT's Christopher Booker travels to Danbury, Connecticut, to examine what has happened to the town, as it struggles to find a use for the empty space in its shopping malls.
