Brave dog stops elephant from entering Indian village

A dog showed enough heroics to stop an elephant from entering a village.

The lone elephant was spotted outside a village near Chikmagalur in South India on March 30. The villagers were familiar with the elephant, which was in the habit of raiding crops.

An anxious crowd gathered and was discussing on ways to chase the elephant away, when a village dog jumped in to their rescue.

It charged towards the elephant and stalled it by barking continuously.

Strangely, the elephant seemed to get intimidated by the barking dog and did not attempt to enter the village.

There were moments when the dog got too close to the behemoth and had to beat a hasty retreat as the elephant took a swipe at it with its trunk.

The intruder stood at a safe distance while the dog also held its ground. After a standoff that nearly lasted an hour the elephant went away.

Munikrishna, a local villager, said: “Elephants are never dissuaded by crowds, which make a din, to chase them away. But for some reason this elephant yielded to a dog.”
