The United States still leads the pack in overall medals won so far at 29, with China following closely at 27 and South Korea with 13 gold-thru-bronze medals. However, China continues to dominate the gold-medal totals at 17 with Team USA holding on to the second spot with 10 golds. Another exciting accomplishment for Team USA this Summer Olympics is swimmer Michael Phelps breaking an all-time, all-Olympic world record. The 23-year-old won 2 more gold-medals on Wednesday, bringing his gold-medal rackup to 11. He took victories in the 200-meter butterfly as an individual as well as the 800-freestyle relay with American teammates. The previous record for the most gold medals won by an Olympic athlete was set at 9. Russia and Australia followed in the rankings for the individual race while Hungary and Japan took home the silver and bronze for the relay. Another American athlete, Kristen Armstrong, took home gold in cycling, making her the second female cyclist to become an Olympian. She finished the 14.6-mile course in just under 35-minutes. Finishing 24.29 seconds behind USA was Britain, then followed by Switzerland. Switching to women’s gymnastics, it was China making the records. Not only did their men’s team take the gold earlier in the games, but the women’s Chinese team took home its first gold medal in the sport. America earned silver for a second-straight Olympics, and the defending champion Romania settled with a bronze medal. China has swept the gold medals in weightlifting sofar, by taking the number-1 spot for a fifth event. In the 69-kilogram category, France got silver and Armenia won bronze. Over in men’s bball, Team USA took a win over Angola 97 to 76 and the next match that’s up is against Greece on Thursday, and then it’s off to battle the world champion team from Spain who just beat China 85 to 75 in overtime.
