Running with GPS - Garmin watches, Strava, Nike+, RunKeeper - what to choose

Running with GPS is something that runners now have that never existed to the mass market as recently as 10 years ago. What benefits does running with a GPS device bring? There are so many devices to choose from - I use the Strava app for android and my Garmin Forerunner 310 XT. But you also have Nike+, Run Keeper, various Garmin watches, Polar watches, Tom Tom watches, smartphone apps etc. Running with GPS can quickly become confusing.
