U.S. Federal Government Officially Shuts Down

On midnight Saturday, the U.S. federal government entered the 18th partial shutdown of the modern budget era. This is the first time in the history though, that a shutdown has happened when one party, in this case the Republicans, control the government. On Friday night, just before the shutdown, the GOP put forth a bill to keep the government open which needed 60 votes in the Senate and the support of at least 10 Democrats.
