Such is the density of great bouldering spots in Colorado that many world-class problems and climbing areas are found within a stone's throw of the road. The road in question is Bear Lake Road and the boulders on it, which include some of the hardest and best in the world, are known as 'The Circuit.' With a strong local scene, many Colorado natives have made their names climbing tough first ascents on these boulders, but perhaps no climber is more associated with The Circuit than Dave Graham. When a new boulder is discovered within touching distance of the road, Dave and his crew of Paul Robinson, Michael O'Rourke and Diego Lopez Montul turn out in force to pick the proudest lines from The Circuit's newest addition, Phoenix (V14/8b+) . While they all make progress on the boulder's left-hand line, it is Michael's dogged determination, returning to the boulder by himself on an intended rest day, that sees him walk away with the prize.
