Arriving on the scene with funk-inspired psychedelic beats, Bear Witness is an aspiring hip hop artist from South Florida. His widely versatile lyrical abilities combine hip hop styles ranging from spoken word to trap, reggae and pop.
Lawrence Pennington — aka Bear Witness — has created a new genre which he calls “hippie-hop” (trademark pending), which he says “speaks of wisdom passed down from the Grateful Dead, focusing on love, consciousness, and living life to the fullest.”
Pennington, 28, grew up in South Florida and was influenced by hip hop and reggae. After high school he was introduced to the Grateful Dead and the psychedelic counterculture. He spent the next years traveling to music festivals, in love with the adventure and that community. Pennington eventually became known as “Larrbear,” and was living in a world of sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll. Following a near death experience and incarceration for psychedelics, he became motivated to pursue a new vision and voice. He created Bear Witness as a vessel for sharing these virtues while building and uplifting the local community.
