Highly experienced New Zealand guide Marty Schmidt and his son Denali were aiming to be the first father and son team to climb K2, but they have been reported missing and tragically are presumed dead after a large avalanche struck a camp where they were spending the night.

The vast majority of ice climbers and alpinists wear helmets. But among rock climbers, helmet use varies widely depending on where and how you climb. The percentage of respondents who said they usually or always wore a helmet was 49 percent among sport leaders, 53 percent for top-ropers, and 86 percent for leaders on traditional climbs.
