Mit ihrem zweiten Album "Nocturnal" präsentieren sich die Emsländer als musikalisch gereifte Einheit mit einem untrüglichen Gespür für raumgreifende Melodien. Als die Meppener Band Razz 2012 auf irgendeinem Mini-Festival entdeckt wurde, waren Niklas Keiser (Gesang, Gitarre), Christian Knippen (Gitarre), Lukas Bruns (Bass) und Steffen Pott (Schlagzeug) gerade einmal 16, 17 Jahre alt. Die traumwandlerische Sicherheit, mit der sich die vier Freunde bereits damals in ihrem Post-Punk-inspirierten musikalischen Habitat bewegten, war indes atemberaubend. Man wusste sofort: In dieser Band schlummert ein großes Talent. Fünf Jahre später ist dieses Talent in voller Reife erblüht: Nach der Veröffentlichung ihres Album-Debüts "With Your Hands We'll Conquer" (2015) waren Razz auf Megafestivals wie dem Hurricane/Southside zu Gast und spielten eine Tour mit Kraftklub. Sie haben Schule und Ausbildungen abgeschlossen und ihr Leben zuletzt komplett der Musik gewidmet. Und das hört man dem neuen, von Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths u.a.) produzierten Album "Nocturnal" deutlich an. Razz haben sich für "Nocturnal" nicht beirren lassen und sind ihren Kerntugenden treu geblieben. Von der Basis einer klassischen Rockband ausgehend, haben sie ihren Soundentwurf allerdings deutlich vertieft. Diese Musik ist breiter geworden, sie hat mehr Flächen, lebt von einer intensiven Dynamik und stilistischen Vielfalt. Natürlich mögen Interpol und andere für Razz wichtig gewesen sein, aber mit "Nocturnal" haben sie sich von diesen Vorbildern emanzipiert und zu einer eigenen Sprache gefunden.
After their spectacular debut, the natives of Emsland in the west German state of Lower Saxony come across in this cross-genre sophomore effort as a musically mature unit with an unerring feel for expansive melodies.
It takes a band like Razz, really still kids themselves, to demonstrate that, even in 2017, you can still touch people’s hearts and make a statement with guitar-based music, as long as you go about your business with euphoria, passion, conviction, and a ton of talent. This album, produced by Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, Kaiser Chiefs and others), stringently documents an impressive musical development.
It’s a work that pushes all of the supposed rules to the point of parody. A work that pulses with the utter freshness, outstanding songwriting, and clearly defined musical identity that can emerge only from the shared conviction of a closely connected group of musicians – a work that could turn the world on its head, if only for a moment. With their debut album, “With Your Hands We’ll Conquer,” Razz offered the world an irresistible manifesto for modern guitar music. “Nocturnal” takes a huge step further, and is even more savvy, diverse, determined, and melodic.
