Footage has emerged from China of a university student receiving a special gift from her boyfriend on her birthday.

The video, filmed at a university dormitory in Changsha City in southern Hunan Province on November 4, shows the birthday girl slowly pulling out a pile of cash from a box given to her by her boyfriend.

At the beginning, she pulls out five 100 yuan notes and two 20 yuan notes, totalling 520 yuan. In Chinese, 520 is pronounced similarly to "wo ai ni", which means "I love you."

Then, encouraged by friends looking on, she pulls out thirteen 100 yuan notes and ten 10 yuan notes, totalling 1,310 yuan. In Chinese, this is pronounced similarly to "Yi sheng yi shi," which means "one life."

So, 520 and 1310 all together means "I love you forever."
