#BeautifulBrownSkin: Fighting Back Against Skin-Whitening Culture
- 7 years ago
Filipinos are fighting to redefine beauty, participating in a campaign to celebrate the color of their skin.
The campaign is organized with the hashtag #MagandangMorenx, which translates to #BeautifulBrownSkin. The hashtag was started by Filipino actress Asia Jackson, who explained in a tweet that "tan and brown-skinned Filipinos are made to feel insecure, ashamed and embarrassed of the natural color of their skin."
Being "fair-skinned" is prized in many Asian cultures, and skin-whitening products have become a multibillion-dollar industry. But many Filipinos are now calling out the "white-washing culture," expressing pride in their natural skin tones.
