NEW YORK — The suspect in Tuesday's truck attack, which left eight people dead in lower Manhattan, has been charged with federal terrorism offenses.

Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, a 29-year-old Uzbekistan native, is charged with providing material support to ISIS and violence and destruction of motor vehicles, acting US Attorney for the Southern District of New York said, according to CNN.

Saipov told authorities he was inspired by ISIS videos, a federal criminal complaint stated.

Officials said he began planning the attack a year ago and decided to use a truck two months ago.

Law enforcement discovered around 90 ISIS propaganda videos, as well as 4,000 images, many of which were ISIS-related on Saipov's cellphone, according to the FBI.

Saipov came into the U.S. from Uzbekistan in 2010 on a diversity immigrant visa, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
He was living in Paterson, New Jersey with his wife and three children.

A little over six months ago, he became an Uber driver, passing their background check.
