Hendrix said that the title of the song was inspired by a phrase ("purplish haze") from the science fiction novel "The Night of Light" by Philip José Farmer.
But also the music of the song is famous. Today, the extended dominant guitar chord of the track is widely known as "The Hendrix chord". With this technique Hendrix helped to establish the use of chords in popular music.
