There is more than one way to describe 5. You can say 2 + 3 = 5 or 1 x 5 = 5, you can say 3n - 1 = 5 where n = 2. All of that is balanced, equal, correct and simplified. Hell of alot of good that does you if what you need to describe is 3.
And that's where we run into these problems. We have a whole generation of scientists eager to 'break out' with new and exciting ideas in order to get papers published, get tenure in their institutions of choice, etc etc, and are getting there by exploiting abstract mathematics. Just because an equation is eloquent, does not mean it describes what you observe in the natural universe.
