Long-Lost World War II Shipwreck Found Off Coast Of Australia

A 74-year-old maritime mystery was recently solved off the coast of Australia.

The SS Macumba was an Australian merchant ship that was sunk in a Japanese airstrike during World War II. Three people were killed, and the ship sunk to the bottom of the ocean, where it sat for 74 years. No one knew where it was located...until now.

An Australian research vessel, funded by the national government, recently found the wreck in the Arafura Sea using advanced multi-beam sonar systems.

In the seven decades that it's been underwater, the Macumba became an artificial reef. It's now providing a habitat for marine life, turning an Australian tragedy into an underwater home.
