President Trump has blamed poor cell reception for his delayed contact with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto after an 8.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico last week.
“Spoke to President of Mexico to give condolences on terrible earthquake. Unable to reach for 3 days b/c of his cell phone reception at site,” Trump tweeted Thursday.
The U.S. leader has been widely criticized for not reaching out sooner; a recent Los Angeles Times report stated, “Trump’s silence as the earthquake death toll climbed was widely seen here as another sign of Trump’s cool attitude toward Mexico.”
Mexican officials also seemed to notice, particularly since the country had offered to provide food, supplies, and medical aid after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, notes CNBC.
The aid was subsequently rescinded and redirected to domestic recovery efforts.
Mexico’s earthquake is believed to have killed at least 96 people.
