Joe Scarborough has speculated that President Trump’s recent bombshell comments to the New York Times about the Russia investigation may have been motivated by fear.
MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' host said Thursday, “The interview...suggests that there’s an underlying tone of panic here, that he knows something bad is coming...He knows that you can’t pull on that threat too hard or everything starts unraveling.”
In the Times piece, Trump goes after his own attorney general, Jeff Sessions, saying that “Sessions should have never recused himself, and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else.”
The president notes that Sessions’ decision resulted in the special counsel investigation currently headed by former FBI Director Robert Mueller.
The Times report also states that “asked if Mr. Mueller’s investigation would cross a red line if it expanded to look at his family’s finances beyond any relationship to Russia, Mr. Trump said, 'I would say yes.’”
The president also denied he was a target of the probe, saying, “I’m not under investigation. For what? I didn’t do anything wrong.”
Scarborough later agreed with someone else’s take that “Maybe we’re over-analyzing this too much. Maybe this is not about Donald Trump being anything other than scared because he knows what’s in his background, and he knows why he is being as obsequious to Vladimir Putin as he is.”
The host then said, “Maybe he’s just scared to death that years and years of shortcuts are going to catch up with him.”
