President Trump’s favorable ratings have not been great, but he may find solace in the fact that they could improve once he leaves office.
According to a recent Gallup poll, former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have, in their post-presidency years, enjoyed bumps in their popularity.
Shortly after Bush departed the White House, his favorable rating stood at only 35%. It has since risen to an astounding 59%, gaining 7 points in the past year alone.
Obama’s favorable rating of 63% shows improvement since he left office in January, at which time it hovered around 58%.
Neither former president has really spent much time in the spotlight since leaving office.
As Gallup notes, “Bush has not stirred much controversy, as he comments little on issues or candidates, and is usually in the news only for an occasional appearance on behalf of a pet cause or publicity about his newfound love of painting.”
Obama has also largely refrained from weighing in on the activities of current administration, with the notable exception of Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord.
