Meat grinder: Man’s hand mangled by meat grinder after glove gets caught in machine

PUZI, TAIWAN — A young man in Taiwan learned about the dangers of kitchen equipment the hard way when his hand was pulled into a meat grinder.

According to Apple Daily, the 22-year-old male employee, surnamed Chen, had just graduated from culinary school and recently joined his uncle’s staff at a turkey rice restaurant.

In a demonstration of good hygiene, Chen always made sure to wear gloves whenever he handled meat in the kitchen. However, it was Chen’s adherence to health codes that may have cost him the use of his hand. On May 18th, Chen was preparing some turkey meat when a glove he was wearing became caught inside the meat grinder.

The meat grinder relentlessly continued to pull the rest of the glove, with Chen’s hand inside of it, farther into the machine. Chen’s uncle immediately unplugged the machine and called firefighters to help. To avoid doing more damage to Chen’s hand, the responders opted not to dismantle the machine there, and brought him — with the meat grinder still attached — to the hospital.

A specialist helped disassemble the meat grinder, but no word yet on whether doctors were able to save Chen’s hand.
