Paris gunman served jail time for shooting at police

The gunman, who killed a policeman in Paris only three days before the first round of presidential elections, served more than 12 years of jail time. Karim Cheurfi, 39, was jailed four times between 2001 and 2014 for attempted murder, violence, and robbery. His most recent arrest was in February after he was heard talking about attacking police, but Cheurfi was not detained due to lack of physical evidence. Cheurfi served jail time after he shot a policeman and a civilian in 2001, but was freed in 2013 after winning a 2005 appeal deal.
