On Tuesday, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow revealed a leaked 2005 Donald Trump tax return showing a claimed income of $150 million and a tax payment of $38 million.
Soon after, Donald Trump Jr. took to Twitter.
His many tweets include, “Thank you Rachel Maddow for proving to your #Trump hating followers how successful @realDonaldTrump is & that he paid $40mm in taxes!,” and, “Watching the media aka #fakenews implode on tv now because they got what they wanted is simply awesome.”
Trump Jr. also wrote, “Ha Ha…” and, “Now @CNN is upset that the returns that they have been dying to get their hands on for 18 months are out but it doesn't fit their narrative!”
Though the rare glimpse into Trump’s financial matters offers some clarity on his tax-paying history, it does raise other concerns.
The New York Times points out that the $38 million paid in 2005 could have been significantly less had it not been for the alternative minimum tax rule.
The publication notes, “That tax serves as a backstop to the ordinary income tax and is intended to prevent wealthy Americans from paying no income tax at all. Without it, Mr. Trump would have paid about $5 million in regular taxes, plus nearly $2 million in self-employment taxes, on $153 million in income in 2005.”
That rule is one President Trump is reportedly hoping to jettison, according to the Times.
