For the third consecutive presidential swearing-in, Don’s Johns is supplying portable toilets positioned throughout the National Mall, notes WJLA.
While that would typically not be noteworthy, this time around, it has become a topic of major interest.
On Friday, it was reported that people were seen going from port-a-potty to port-a-potty, slapping strips of blue tape over the company’s logo.
Not only did the effort fall short of success, as the Don’s Johns name can still be clearly seen at close range, but it also created quite a bit of chatter.
News outlets reported a number of theories regarding the motivation behind the move.
As Mashable noted, "Even Trump could see how bad that looks — and how quickly the jokes could turn into potty humor."
The Presidential Inaugural Committee has since announced that it was in no way involved, reports the Washington Post.
There were also rumblings that the taping was ordered by Don’s Johns, something the company has since denied, telling the Associated Press, “We're proud to have our name on the units..."
It was soon learned by the Washington Post that the toilet signage cover-up was ordered by the Architect of the Capitol to, “...bring them into compliance with Capitol Grounds restrictions on advertising.”
According to Don’s Johns, it has not encountered such signage restrictions in the past.
