Human sputum samples are collected from the TB centres in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, and are used to train the Rats for TB detection. These samples have already been screened by microscopy, but every week, the rats pick out samples which have been missed by the conventional method, and which are confirmed positive afterwards. The patients are recalled and treatment is started, preventing further infections to other people. Viewers can note how rats indicate TB samples by scratching the sniffing hole, after which they are rewarded with Banana.
