Amtrak is plotting to bring back its transcontinental passenger route in the Deep South, a decade after Hurricane Katrina wiped out a long stretch of the railroad. Red-state Republicans, who some have called an unlikely ally, are supporting the effort.
Looking for a way to demonstrate that its traditionally money-losing long-distance routes deserve Congress' investment, Amtrak hopes to extend the City of New Orleans line from Louisiana to Orlando, Fla.
