Italian PM Matteo Renzi resigns after EU referendum loss

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi resigned after being clearly defeated in a referendum vote over his plan to reform the constitution. This news comes as a major victory for anti-establishment and right-wing parties throughout Europe. Nearly 60 percent of Italians vote against the proposed reforms, which would have made significant changes to Italy’s constitution. Renzi conceded defeat in a late-night news conference from his residence, taking responsibility for the outcome of the vote. “My experience in government ends here... I did all I could to bring this to victory. If you fight for an idea, you cannot lose," Renzi said.
