On Monday, President-elect Donald Trump met with General David Petraeus, the former director of the CIA. Commenting on the meeting, Trump tweeted - "Just met with General Petraeus--was very impressed!"

Earlier in the day, Bloomberg reported that Petraeus has become another candidate to join the pool of those being considered for the secretary of state position, according to a source within the Trump's transition team.
Petraeus worked with the Obama and Bush administrations and was highly regarded by both presidents.
However, due to his involvement in a scandal concerning his sharing of classified information, Petraeus resigned from his post in 2012, notes Reuters.
According to CBS News, in 2015, he opted to pay a fine and serve probation rather than proceed to criminal trial.
During his campaign, Trump defended Petraeus, alleging that Hillary Clinton, in using a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state, had done far worse.
On Petraeus being a potential candidate for the secretary of state position, CNN notes he has a "record that raises questions about his ability to get a security clearance and to be confirmed -- particularly as the GOP painted Hillary Clinton as unfit for the presidency for her own handling of classified material.
