As kids, the teasing can be brutal. As adults, the looks can be startling.
And for those with an ear condition, their confidence can be shattered. This is the story about protruding ears, floppy ears or, as it is sometimes called, prominent ear.
Fortunately, the condition rarely causes physical pain. But embarrassment can lead to great emotional pain. Rather than focus on the problems with these ear deformities, our story is about a solution that will give every person with protruding ears, and even their friends and family, hope, confidence and something to smile about.
Introducing Cartilaze by Numena Medical Corporation.
A New Standard of Care and a breakthrough in ear surgery, administered by experienced surgeons like Dr. Tim Ragsdale.
“Cartilaze is a new non-surgical laser assisted treatment to treat protruding ears. And this can be done in the office without anesthesia. It’s also potentially more effective because we can put the ears in exactly the position we want them, and we don’t have to worry about possibly overcorrecting one ear compared to the other.”
The best way to tell the story of Cartilaze is to introduce you to a real candidate for the procedure.
This is Anna, a 41 year old mother of two. Anna is very happy with her life with one exception; her Protruding Ears. As a child, Anna’s friends teased her, calling her names like Dumbo.
“Hi. Hi How are you? Good and you. Good Thanks.” This is where the story changes for Anna. Prior to the new Cartilaze procedure, in order to get her ears fixed, we would be watching Anna check in at a surgery center or hospital preparing for Otoplasty, a traumatic surgical procedure for correcting ear deformities.
“Well surgical ostoplasties have quite a bit more downtime. There is more pain involved. Patients have cuts behind their ears. There is sometimes problems with scarring. There can also be a problem with sutures that protrude through the skin. Other possibilities of infection, things like that cause problems for the patient.”
Dr. Ragsdale is right. Otoplasty used to be one of the only options for Protruding Ears.
It is a serious surgery typically performed under general anesthesia. Add to that, sutures, pain medication, a great deal of healing time and the possibility of infection. Even for the best surgeons performing the procedure, symmetry between both ears is hard to accomplish, and in many cases, the ears can actually be pinned back too far. To say the least, the stress of Otosplasty has deterred many with Prominent Ears to even consider the surgery.
“In fact, patients that in the past did not have surgery because of either fear of anesthesia or the concerns with the side effects, are now candidates for this procedure. Cartilaze, by Numena Medical Corporation, takes only 30 minutes per ear, involves no anesthesia, no sutures, & no pain medication. A simple laser assisted procedure for treating protruding ears that brings better results at a more affordable price.
“We treat each ear with the laser over 100 times and they really don’t feel it. There is a cooling probe which prevents the skin from heating up and as a result, it’s basically a pain free procedure.”
Let’s get back to Anna, who has checked in the Cartilaze Center for Excellence, a state of the art outpatient center. Easy, comfortable and convenient, just like Cartilaze itself. Once the safety glasses are on, the laser is turned on, and the simple process begins.
“We will move this around in front and behind the ear multiple times.”
The laser will cause Anna’s ears to grow new cartilage. This new cartilage will remain pliable for three weeks, so the ear will be held in the desired shape up until that time.
“Doing Okay? Yeah. Not feeling anything there?"
“No not at all. Good”
Patients say the cool laser tip feels like an ice cube being pressed against the ear. After about an hour, the entire procedure is done and Anna is ready to go home. No medication, no pain, no problems from Cartilaze. For a few weeks she’ll wear a small trellis on each ear. The trellis will help keep her ears in place while the new cells mature. This patented trellis, is like a retainer for the ear, a critical part of the Cartilaze procedure.
“Okay. So this is the Trellis. It’s going to be worn behind the ear in its new position so that over the next three weeks the cells that build cartilage can rebuild the ear and hold it into its new shape.” “Okay, that’s perfect.”
