The BetVictor Welsh Open world ranking event has been ever present on the calendar since 1992, which makes it the longest running ranking event other than the World and UK Championships. South Wales is a traditional hot bed of snooker, with all-time greats including Ray Reardon, Terry Griffiths and Mark Williams coming from the region. Support for snooker in the area is strong and fans pack the arena for this tournament which brings the world’s best players to Wales. In 2015, the event moved to Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena for the first time since 2003, and it was won by John Higgins, beating Ben Woollaston in the final. The World Championship, sponsored by Betfred until 2017, is snooker’s most important event, and one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. Since 1977, the tournament as been staged at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, renowned for its unique and intense atmosphere. The tournament is supported by Sheffield City Council and will stay at the Crucible until at least 2017. Host broadcaster is BBC Sport and the event is watched by nearly 400 million people worldwide. It is sport at its finest.
