Washington Monument Closes Due To Elevator Problems

Authorities announced on Monday that the Washington Monument will be closed until further notice due to the ongoing elevator issues.

The Washington Monument has been closed until further notice.
On Monday, officials with the National Mall and Memorial Parks made the announcement on Facebook.
The message states, “Despite the continuing work on the Washington Monument elevator, we have not been able to determine the causes of the ongoing reliability issues. As a result, we have made the difficult decision not to reopen the Washington Monument until we can modernize the elevator control system.”
It goes on to say, “The scope of work to be accomplished while the monument is closed and the duration of the closure are still being determined; we expect to have an announcement with those additional details in the next couple of weeks.”
As a USA Today report points out, the monument’s elevator, which ascends about 500 feet to an observation deck and museum, has repeatedly malfunctioned despite extensive repairs.
