Ford contradicts Trump, says no US job losses when small-car plant opens in Mexico

DEARBORN, MICHIGAN — American automaker Ford Motors has announced that it will move part of its business overseas, in the process drawing criticism from Republican candidate Donald Trump.
The Detroit Free Press reports that Ford is investing $1.6 billion into building a plant in Mexico in preparation for shifting small-car production out of the country over the next two to three years.
Small vehicles like the Focus and C-Max are currently being built in the company’s plant in Wayne, Michigan, which employs 3,747 workers.
By 2018, production of the two cars will move from Michigan to San Luis Potosi, where lower wages will reduce costs.
Critics, including Trump, are blasting the company for local jobs that may be lost as a result of the move. But Ford has denied the claims, saying that the Wayne, Michigan facility will still assemble vehicles. According to Reuters, analysts expect that the plant instead produce larger vehicles like the Bronco SUV and the Ranger pickup.
