Authorities in New York are investigating a potential hate crime after a Muslim woman wearing a hijab was reportedly set on fire outside of a store on Fifth Avenue.
According to the New York Police Department, on Saturday, as the woman looked at a Valentino window display, a man with a lighter approached her and held the flame to her dress.
A police spokesperson noted, “She felt a sudden heat on her left arm. She noticed she was on fire and patted the fire out.”
A quarter-sized hole was left in her shirt but she was not harmed, police said.
The suspect reportedly fled and an arrest has not yet been made.
This attack is the latest in a string of violence directed towards Muslims in New York, notes the Washington Post.
According to WNBC, last week, two women were attacked as they walked with their babies along a Brooklyn street.
In August, an imam and his aide were fatally shot when leaving afternoon prayers in Queens.
