Sting - Englishman in New York

Sting, de son vrai nom Gordon Matthew Sumner, né le 2 octobre 1951 à Newcastle, est un musicien et chanteur britannique, et occasionnellement acteur de cinéma.

Fils d'un laitier et d'une coiffeuse, aîné d'une famille de quatre enfants, il se passionne tôt pour la musique, encouragé par sa mère pianiste amateur. Il fait ses premières armes musicales à la guitare mais découvre aussi le piano, la mandoline, le saxophone, l'harmonica et la flûte de Pan.

Il a commencé comme bassiste de jazz la nuit alors qu'il était instituteur le jour. Souvent affublé d'un pull-over à rayures jaunes et noires, ses amis musiciens le surnomment Sting, en anglais le dard ou dans le langage courant l’abeille.

Il s'est d'abord fait connaître comme bassiste et chanteur du groupe de fusion jazz Last Exit, puis au sein du trio The Police, fondé en 1977, avant de s'engager dans une carrière solo à partir de 1985.

Sting est également un personnage engagé : il a participé a la création de la Rainforest Foundation (pour préserver la forêt vierge amazonienne), aux côtés du reporter belge Jean-Pierre Dutilleux, à la demande du chef kayapo Raoni. Avec sa femme Trudie Styler, il est très activement engagé dans son organisation et ses actions ; il organise chaque année en avril un concert de charité.
