Conjoined twins being kept at a hospital in Damascus while awaiting an evacuation for necessary medical treatment have died.

According to the Syrian American Medical Society the Syrian Arab Red Crescent removed the infants from a town under siege on August 12th.

The twins, who were born on July 12th, were taken to and kept at a hospital in Damascus, but information regarding their condition was not disclosed.

Aware that surgery would need to be performed elsewhere, the group began putting together plans for evacuation and treatment.

However, neither the government nor the Syrian Arab Red Crescent cooperated with those efforts.

Following the children’s deaths, the president of Syrian American Medical Society said his group, “…received commitments from specialized hospitals in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East to perform the needed surgery at no cost…However, all of our efforts and requests were ignored. The tragic death of these two brave souls could have easily been prevented. This is unacceptable.”
