Wal-Mart employee gives homeless man shoes off his feet, works in socks

LITHIA SPRINGS, GEORGIA — If Wal-Mart worker Phil Powell doesn’t win employee of the month, no one should.

On July 29, while working in the Lithia Springs Wal-Mart, Powell saw a homeless man in the store. After looking down at the man’s feet, he noticed the poor guy didn’t have any shoes. Wanting to lessen the man’s plight even just a little bit, he took off his own shoes and gave them away.

Powell’s act of kindness didn’t go unnoticed. A shopper saw the entire thing, and ran up to the homeless man to ask about the exchange. The homeless man pointed to Powell, who was still working in pink socks.

The woman, Myrna Kines, took a photo of Powell and posted it to Facebook to tell the world of his good deed. Soon after, the store manager approached Powell, who told him he used to be homeless too, and wanted to help because he knew how the man felt.

The shoes Powell gave away were no ordinary pair. They were white and pink Converse sneakers, custom-made for breast cancer awareness, in honor of his grandmother. It’s the same reason he was wearing pink socks to go along with them.

Powell was rewarded with a new pair of shoes of his choosing from the footwear department. He picked out a $13 pair of slippers.
