Khizr Khan’s powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention and Donald Trump’s negative comments about it have prompted many to show their support for the Khan family and their fallen son.
In recent days, a number of people have traveled to Arlington National Cemetery to visit the grave of U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who died in 2004 while serving in Iraq.
Some delivered flowers to the headstone, while others left American flags and personal notes.
Jake Dowell, a 17-year-old boy from Chicago visiting Khan's grave, told the Washington Post, “I just wanted to see and pay my respects to an American hero...a representation of what it means to be an American.”
Hero is an apt description for Khan, as he died while saving others from a suicide bomber.
A taxi carrying the explosives was headed towards a heavily populated guard post, according to WRC.
Khan spotted and ran towards the vehicle, prompting the driver to detonate the bomb before reaching the intended destination.
Following his death, he was awarded both a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, notes the Washington Post.
