ALBANY, AUSTRALIA — A kayaker encountered a shark believed to be four to five meters long off the coast of Albany, Australia.

The encounter was caught on camera. The kayaker, Ian Watkins, could be heard on video making a mayday call, just as the dorsal fin of a shark appears next to him and disappears below his kayak.

Watkins told ABC News that at first he believed the shark was a wake emitted by a nearby whale watching boat, but upon closer inspection, he realized it was a white pointer, otherwise known as a great white shark.

Great white sharks are known to frequent Australian beaches. There have been reported encounters with great white sharks measuring 6 to 7 meters in the region.
