July 21st marked the 23rd year of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s annual melting of confiscated firearms.
This time around, more than 7,000 guns were destroyed.
As law dictates the weapons can neither be returned nor offered for sale, the county converts them in material useful in making steel-reinforced bars.
Over the years, nearly 20,000 pounds of seized weapons have been melted.
Much of the resulting metal has been used on road and bridge construction projects throughout California, Nevada, and Arizona.
