It all began last Friday, when tanks appeared at strategic locations in Istanbul and military jets and helicopters were spotted over the capital Ankara. The uprising quickly crumbled but hundreds were left dead or wounded.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered a massive wave of arrests, with thousands of members of the security forces and judiciary detained. Erdogan is leaving nobody in any doubt that he intends to rule with an iron fist. And he’s talked of reinstating the death penalty.
