Typically, students who do well are celebrated, but Mayte Lara of Texas recently learned that isn’t always the case, reports the Daily Mail.
The graduate from Austin’s Crockett High School, tweeted, “Valedictorian, 4.5GPA, full tuition paid for at UT, 13 cords/medals, nice legs, oh and I'm undocumented."
According to NBC News, "Texas is one of 17 states that allows undocumented students who graduated from an in-state high school or earned a GED to receive in-state tuition."
Nonetheless, Lara's post attracted the wrath of many.
One Twitter user responded, “I did it legally, nobody should get a short cut,” while another wrote, “We're a nation of laws. I abide by them and so should she.”
A user named Dave S. took a different route, bemoaning the inequities suffered by white men in America. He noted, “put a white male in exact same situation: he has to take out $100k in student loans. It wasn't the GPA, honey.”
Lara has since deactivated her Twitter account, according to Opposing Views.
