After 20 years and more than $10 billion, Switzerland’s Gotthard Base Tunnel is ready to start welcoming passengers.

In 1996, work began on Switzerland’s Gotthard Base Tunnel project, a transit initiative that aimed to shorten the travel times across the Alps by drilling a rail route through them, notes USA Today. 
17 years and more than $10 billion later, the project is readying to welcome its first riders.
NBC News is reporting that, on June 1, the completion of the extraordinary feat will be celebrated with a grand inaugural ceremony.
