Free Antivirus 2012 Comparison

6 years ago77.8K views

Here's our comparison for the best free anti-virus apps of 2012. In the running this year are Avast Microsoft Securities Essentials, Ad-Aware, Panda Cloud, Avira and AVG. As always, each app has a score based on our exhaustive testing and analysis and the expert knowledge of our team. First up, and in last place in our analysis is Panda Cloud, the cloud-based antivirus. Panda has one of the best threat detection rates of all, but it's not very practical if you don't have an internet connection, for some reason. It's also nice and light, but loses out in terms of features which it lacks compared to the competition. At number five is Microsoft Security Essentials, the official Microsoft antivirus which now comes pre-installed in Windows 8 under the name Windows Defender. It's the winner in terms of performance, so ideal if your PC isn't very powerful. And, of course, it's integration into Windows is perfect. However, it lacks options. It's not very attractive, and it's analysis is not very detailed. In fourth place, it's Ad-Aware, that since Version 10 was released, has transformed itself into a total antivirus suite and has the best malware detection of all the apps in this comparison. Although it doesn't have many tools, its interface is clean and clear. Performance is not outstanding, and it can be a bit of a resource [inaudible 00:01:40] cleaning. But overall, Ad-Aware is much improved, and we are expecting great things from it next year. Now for the top three, Avast is third and continues to be one of the best free antiviruses around. It has eight layers of protection, a sandbox, remote assistance, and an excellent rate of malware detection that always keeps it as an antivirus leader. The performance has dropped a little bit this year, but that's because this year's Avast is more complete in terms of options and high quality features. We still love Avast. In second place is AVG Free Antivirus. As well as having fantastic performance and detection scores, AVG gives you a practical toolbar with privacy and website reputation options and a new interface that's more Windows 8 style. All of this comes together to give AVG Free Antivirus a deserved second place. The winner of this comparison, the most consistent in terms of malware detection and performance is the excellent Avira Free Antivirus. Avira's engine is the best you can find in the world of Antivirus. It's got a powerful toolbar with popup blocker, website reputation tool, and an efficient do not track system. In 2012, Avira Free Antivirus is the best free security app you can find for windows, and we highly recommend it.
