New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former first lady of the United States, is one of the candidates for the Democratic nomination in this year’s presidential election. Hillary was the only American first lady to run for public office and became the first female senator in the state in 2000 when she was elected.
Clinton began her career as a lawyer and began to take a prominent position in policy matters as first lady. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed his wife to head and be the chairwoman of the Task Force on National Health Care Reform, hoping to replicate the success she had in leading the effort for Arkansas education reform. The recommendation of the task force became known as the Clinton health care plan, a complex proposal that would mandate employers to provide health coverage to their employees through individual health maintenance organizations.
This major initiative failed to gain approval by the U.S. Congress in 1994, but it didn’t stop her because in 1997 she established the State Children's Health Insurance Program and the Adoption and Safe Families Act.
On January 20, 2007, Clinton announced on her Web site the formation of a presidential exploratory committee, with the intention to become a candidate for president in the United States presidential election of 2008. In her announcement, she stated, "I'm in. And I'm in to win." No woman has ever been nominated by a major party for President of the United States,] and Clinton is the first woman seen to have a good chance of winning a nomination.
